KAWS

When I first started painting over billboards I was just doing letter pieces like ‘KAWS’ pieces, the way I would do on a wall. But as I was doing it, I just made it incorporate into the advertisement and then from that I got into thinking more about painting over advertisements and advertisements’ effect on people and the visibility your work gets when you paint over an ad. And that is such an iconic image, as opposed to writing on a brick wall.

I painted with no brushstrokes, clean and unobtrusive, as if it were part of the ad. I wanted people to think it was actually part of the ad campaign.

So with the advertisements at the time, and later with toy editions and objects, I just wanted to kind of have a dialogue with people on the street.

Straatkunst in Suriname

Street art is like a story passed on and on by a lot of people. Every new painting is seen by people and criticised. What is successful will be copied and extended, what is not popular will disappear, like in a Darwinistic process of evolution and natural selection.

Urban Interventions by Artists

Public spaces do not belong to government and advertising. The idea of public is inclusive and, hopefully, participatory. It is our right and, perhaps more important for the future, an obligation, to exercise and challenge the demarcation of truly public spaces. Let’s not reduce the ideals behind the concept of public into simple publicity.

For Space

You are not just traveling -through- space or across it, you are altering it a little. Space and place emerge through active material practices. Moreover, this movement of yours is not just spatial, it is also temporal. The London you left just a half an hour ago (as you speed through Cheddington) is not the London of now. It has already moved on.

Doreen Massey makes an impassioned argument for revitalising our imagination of space. She takes on some well-established assumptions from philosophy, and some familiar ways of characterising the 21st century world, and shows how they restrain our understanding of both the challenge and the potential of space.
